Thanks to the City of Berkeley’s Civic Arts program, the Berkeley Rama Mural at Meyer Sound has come to life on a building that was originally an early 20th Century saloon. The mural is across the street from the historic Kala Art Institute and is part of the Meyer Sound complex, along the vibrant West Berkeley Heinz Avenue corridor.
The mural is based upon my Rama Print series, including two mixed media paintings which are in the permanent collection of the UC Berkeley Art Museum. The source of inspiration is a historic meditation tradition from India where the name of Lord Rama, a Hindu deity, is written repeatedly upon a surface to focus the mind. The saloon is a Berkeley twist, but the spirit leads and who am I to blow against the wind…
